ALL THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR SKIN
There is nothing - and we repeat NOTHING - worse than going to sleep with perfectly cleansed and moisturized skin and waking up with completely ravaged skin.
How is this possible? Up to 8 hours ago my skin was perfectly under control and this morning I woke up with three new friends on my chin and one on my forehead?
While it may seem that pimples appear magically overnight, the truth is that it can take anywhere from four to a maximum of 30 days for a blemish to form and appear on our skin.
Even if you are doing everything correctly and with the utmost care, there are still a myriad of secondary reasons why your skin is prone to post-pimple blemishes.
Identifying the root cause of your acne is the first step in achieving the skin you desire. Once the trigger is identified, a treatment plan can be put in place; because knowing the cause of your acne means you're already halfway there.
CAUSE #1: YOU ARE WEARING A FACE MASK (RIGHTLY SO)
Since 2020, the phenomenon of chin acne caused by face masks has a name: Maskne.
Covering the lower third of the face with a fabric or paper mask tends to cause breakouts simply because the mask material causes friction, pressure, rubbing, or occlusion of the skin's pores. Technically known as acne mechanica, maskne is more prevalent in those who wear masks for long periods of time and for almost their entire day. Breathing while wearing a mask creates a humid environment, which is the perfect environment for pimples to form.
CAUSE #2: POOR DIET
Fatty and greasy foods, sugar, dairy, and starchy white bread can generally cause breakouts. Any food that causes inflammation in the skin can lead to a breakout as blood sugar spikes create inflammation. In addition, these sugar spikes also create an excess production of sebum, increasing the chance of clogged pores.
CAUSE #3: YOUR PROTEIN SHAKES AREN'T AS GOOD FOR YOU AS YOU THINK
What you eat and consume throughout the day can be the cause of your impure, inflamed, and reddened skin. Everything from dairy to fried foods and even chocolate – yes, even that has been labeled a culprit, and protein powders can also be added to the list. If your powder contains milk proteins, a common ingredient in protein powders, these can clog pores and cause breakouts. Studies show a connection between milk proteins and acne, especially in teenagers who start to over-exercise. Like all things, exercising too often is not good for the body! Exercise just right and with weekly rests.
CAUSE #4: HORMONE FLUCTUATIONS
Changes in hormone levels can send sebum production into overdrive and leave you with breakouts on your chin, jawline, and cheek area due to internal skin inflammation, clogged pores, and acne-causing bacteria.
CAUSE #5: OVERLOADING YOUR SKIN WITH STRIPPING INGREDIENTS (too many products!)
When it comes to products, only use what you truly need. There's no point in layering unnecessary products and making your skin lose its natural pH. Over-the-counter acne products formulated with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur can sometimes dry out the skin and make it flaky and red. When the skin is deprived of its normal hydration, it starts to feel the lack and produces more sebum than usual; consequently, the excess sebum will clog the pores, which in turn will give rise to very unwelcome pimples.
CAUSE #6: YOU ARE USING PRODUCTS WITH THE WRONG INGREDIENTS
We're sorry to tell you, but yes, not all beauty and skincare ingredients on the market are compatible with every skin type. What works for one person can be harmful to another. Make sure to read the label on every product and try to understand what's in the products you put on your face and body. It's best to avoid anything that contains sulfates, surfactants, synthetic ingredients, and artificial fragrances and dyes. Also, if you are prone to breakouts, opt for non-comedogenic formulas.
CAUSE #7: YOUR HAIR PRODUCTS
Just as skincare products can clog facial pores, the same goes for hair products. They too can be formulated with ingredients similar to those used in skincare, and just like serums and moisturizers, they can cause breakouts.
CAUSE #8: STRESS
Simply put, stress shows on your skin. When the body is under extreme and recurrent stress, more than normal amounts of the stress hormone, cortisol, are produced. Cortisol is known to stimulate the sebaceous glands and produce testosterone, which can lead to pimples.
Don't stress, take it easy!
CAUSE #9: YOU'RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH QUALITY SLEEP
There's a reason they call it beauty sleep. While you're resting, your body works hard to rebalance itself and cortisol levels decrease. If you don't sleep through the night or don't sleep at all, cortisol levels remain elevated.
